Iran News Round Up

The Iran News Round Up ran from February 2009-September 2018. Visit the Iran File for the latest analysis.

Key takeaway:  Senior officials rejected the possibility of American investigations of Iranian military sites after the Trump administration reportedly expressed interest in such inspections.

The Associated Press reported on July 27 that President Donald Trump’s administration is pursuing inspections of “suspicious” Iranian military bases “in a bid to test the strength” of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The JCPOA permits the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to request access to military sites under certain conditions, although analysts differ on whether site visits are required to verify aspects of the deal. Senior Foreign Policy Adviser to the Supreme Leader Ali Akbar Velayati and IRGC Air Force Commander Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh vehemently denied that Iran will allow the U.S. to investigate Iranian military sites. Although the Trump administration re-certified Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal for the second time in mid-July, President Trump has expressed his openness to the U.S. pulling out of the JCPOA.

This Iran News Round Up predominantly covers events from August 4-7.

Rouhani sworn in for second term.

President Hassan Rouhani was sworn in for his second term in office on August 5. The ceremony focused on the republican nature of the Islamic Republic’s political system. The ceremony differed from the August 3 ceremony in which Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei formally endorsed Rouhani’s second term. Rouhani stated that his administration “prefers peace to war and reform to stagnation.” He added that Iran is “always prepared to defend [itself], but we don’t consider defense to be possible only with guns: we support our armed forces but our greatest weapon is the will of the people.” Rouhani stressed that the nuclear deal is “an example of consensus in Iran” but that a violation of it would “be faced with the coordinated response of the nation and the government.” Rouhani acknowledged the presence of the foreign dignitaries at the ceremony, including Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, Iraqi President Fuad Masum, and UK Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa Alastair Burt. He also highlighted that “cooperation with friendly countries is not only a conscious choice but a necessity.” (President.ir)
