Gulf of Aden Security Review

A regularly updated review of both Yemen and the Horn of Africa covering topics related to security, governance, and militant activity.

Yemen: Houthis conduct their first attack on Saudi Arabia since April; Israel says it will ask US approval to send advanced air defense system to Saudi Arabia and the UAE

Somalia: Al Shabaab attacks Kenyan base in southern Somalia; Al Shabaab assassinates SNA soldier in Mogadishu

Yemen Security Brief:

The Houthis launched at least one ballistic missile targeting Khamis Mushait, southwestern Saudi Arabia, on June 30.[i] Saudi air defenses intercepted the missiles, which did not cause any casualties. Authorities halted air traffic at Abha international airport southwest of Khamis Mushait following the interception. Saudi Arabia usually halts air traffic after missile or drone interceptions near airports. This was the Houthis’ first attack targeting Saudi Arabia since Yemen’s truce agreement came into effect on April 1.

Israeli media reported on June 28 that Israel intends to send the “Iron Beam” air defense system to the UAE and Saudi Arabia.[ii] The intended transfer of the system to the two Gulf States marks the latest stage of growing military cooperation between Israel and the Gulf States.

Somalia Security Brief:

Al Shabaab raided a Kenyan African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) base near Taabto, Afmadow district, Lower Jubba, southern Somalia, on June 29. Neither side reported any casualties.[iii]

Al Shabaab assassinated a Somali National Army soldier in Weydow district, Mogadishu, on June 30.[iv]
