Iran News Round Up

The Iran News Round Up ran from February 2009-September 2018. Visit the Iran File for the latest analysis.

Key takeaway: Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei continued his rhetorical pressure against President Hassan Rouhani, rejecting Rouhani’s claims that the Iran nuclear deal improved Iran’s foreign and domestic position.

President Rouhani highlighted the benefits of the JCPOA, which is the main accomplishment of his presidency, in advancing the domestic and foreign position of Iran. Shortly thereafter, Supreme Leader Khamenei rejected Rouhani’s claims and downplayed the role of any single administration in improving the conditions of the country. The continuing clashes between President Rouhani and the Supreme Leader this close to the election suggest that Khamenei is at least willing to give rhetorical assistance to Rouhani’s conservative competitors.

Tehran Mayor Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and First Vice President Eshagh Jahangiri exceeded expectations in the first televised presidential debates after both candidates went head-to-head on economic policy. Ebrahim Raisi, the leading conservative candidate, received little media attention from conservative Iranian outlets while western-oriented sources highlighted his lackluster performance in the first round of debates. There will likely be two more rounds of debates prior to the elections on May 19.

This Iran News Round Up covers predominantly covers events from April 27-May 1.

Khamenei repudiates Rouhani’s comments on détente with the west.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rebuffed President Hassan Rouhani’s statement that “The JCPOA removed the shadow of war, threats, and sanctions from the country.” Khamenei countered:  “certain individuals say…’we managed to take away the shadow of war over the country’...These statements are not right. It is the presence of the people that has removed the shadow of war, and not the authorities.” Khamenei's critique of Rouhani's statement suggests that the Supreme Leader is willing to help Rouhani’s conservative opponents in advance of the May 19 elections.
