US Africa Command (AFRICOM) conducted an airstrike targeting al Shabaab near Janaale in central Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region on March 10. The strike killed five militants. AFRICOM conducted an airstrike targeting al Shabaab near Janaale the day prior.
Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency reported that al Shabaab arrested and executed its former high ranking Amniyat (intelligence) officer Muse Moalim in Buale in southern Somalia’s Middle Jubba region on March 9. Moalim coordinated Amniyat activity in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu before resigning in mid-February for reasons that remain unclear. His resignation occurred a week after al Shabaab’s leader expelled the Amniyat commander from al Shabaab’s executive council for questioning the group’s targeting of civilians in attacks in Mogadishu.
Jubbaland State security forces pulled out of eastern Kenya’s Mandera County and moved to southwestern Somalia’s Gedo region on March 9. The presence of Jubbaland State security forces in Kenya caused political tension between the Somali and Kenyan governments. A Kenyan delegation met with Somali President Mohamed Farmajo on March 8 to discuss these tensions and scheduled future negotiations between the two governments.
