Ahlu Sunna wa al Jama'a (ASWJ) is a primarily Sufi paramilitary group opposed to al Shabaab. Its members took up arms against al Shabaab in 2008 after the group began destroying Sufi shrines. ASWJ agreed to cooperate with Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government in its fight against al Shabaab in exchange for cabinet positions in 2010.
