CTP's Threat Update series provides you with a weekly analysis and assessment of the al Qaeda network and Iran.

[Notice: The Critical Threats Project frequently cites sources from foreign domains. All such links are identified with an asterisk(*) for the reader's awareness.]

Below are the takeaways from the week:

IRAN

Iran committed a *limited violation of the nuclear deal on July 8. Iran seeks to pressure Europe to offer economic incentives to salvage the deal without triggering the reimposition of EU sanctions and provoking the US and Israel. Europe called for a meeting of the agreement’s signatories in response, which may lead to discussion on reimposing sanctions. Europe has not yet initiated the dispute mechanism that could lead to reimposing sanctions.

NORTH AND WEST AFRICA

The Islamic State increased attacks intended to destabilize Tunisia and Niger, two key US partners, in the past two weeks. Islamic State militants assaulted a military camp in western Niger on July 1 as part of an effort to degrade security and expand in the country. Recent suicide bombings in Tunisia may have ties to the network that attacked tourist sites in 2015, raising the risk of similar attacks this tourist season.

YEMEN

A previous version of the Threat Update cited a source that erroneously reported that Egypt detained an Iranian oil tanker in the Suez Canal in late June.
