Taliban’s “Spring Offensive”

April 16, 2012
Threat Type: Violent Incident

Threat Intensity: None

In a series of coordinated attacks on Sunday, Taliban militants launched their “spring offensive” by attacking embassies, NATO headquarters and the parliament in Kabul and in three eastern Afghan provinces. The fighting between militants and security forces ended after 18 hours of “gunfire, rocket attacks and explosions.” The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attacks, but U.S. and Afghan officials believe that the Pakistan-based Haqqani Network was behind the attacks, and the lone surviving militant confirmed the Haqqani connection (Reuters, CNN, ET).
